We hosted our second face-to-face (F2F) event on Tuesday, August 2nd at the Tennessee Hospital Association headquarters in Brentwood, TN.

Gail Gibson, the Assistant Vice President for HCA Healthcare’s Physician Services Group moderated a panel of experienced healthcare professionals who have faced the topic of error transparency, how to communicate with the press, public, employees, and how to use errors to improve patient care in the future. The panelists included Veronica Elders, Chief Nursing Officer of Nashville General Hospital; Marilyn Dubree, Executive Chief Nursing Officer at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dr. Jenny Slayton, Senior Vice President of Quality, Safety and Risk Prevention at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Gail kicked off afternoon’s discussion with a reminder of how transparency is critical to improve patient safety. Each of the panelists emphasized the need to build and maintain a culture of transparency; training all employees to notice and correct processes to be better. They also discussed the sensitive nature and protocols in place when errors do occur.
Marilyn Dubree challenged all professionals in attendance that as a leader, you need to be prepared to hear the unexpected. Do not be defensive and to take every opportunity to learn and grow—listen for understanding.
The audience was engaged and asked many questions about how to create this culture in practice, what routines the panelists have put into place in their workplaces, and how to handle the press in instances where errors occur.

We appreciate the timely discussion and the engaged participants. We were all reminded, again, how good it is to be in person again. It was evident that the panelists know each other well from their deep experience in Nashville’s healthcare ecosystem and many colleagues came to support and re-connect.
Thank you again to the THA for hosting the event and to Gail, Marilyn, Veronica and Jenny for an incredible learning experience.
