Fall 2022 message - On the horizon in healthcare

Colleagues,
I bring you Fall greetings and gratefulness for your collaboration and support through this year. As I enjoy the crisp autumn air, I reflect on and am thankful for all the great programs, event, and resources our chapter volunteers have developed and produced for our members and other healthcare leaders across our state. It has been truly inspirational to see this progress in a time of financial struggle for healthcare. It is you and other dedicated, caring leaders who are making a difference.
We continue to see waves of financial troubles within healthcare settings across country. Numerous reports confirm this. Rural hospitals in Tennessee have been hit seriously by a number of blows with some having to shudder their doors (e.g., double digits of rural Tennessee hospitals have closed over the past decade) and many others have ended services in an attempt to stay solvent. In the past 3 years, not only rural hospitals in the state, but also larger health systems, are struggling financially. We are in a time when we leaders are in position to work together and to address not only our local balance sheets, but also to pursue innovation, as well as advocate in public policy in support of our communities and neighbors.
As we now are entering our strategic planning season for our chapter boards, I ask you to please recognize in your environmental scans the intense financial threats with which our member organizations are facing. As chapter officers and other volunteers, consider how your position in our state (both with your chapter and your healthcare organization) can assist with bringing leaders together; how we can assist with resource development; how we can develop programs and conferences that can bring ideas, collaboration, innovations, and actions forward. I believe in the power of our chapters to make a difference in the struggles we are facing today in healthcare finance and call on us to step up even further.
